Early this spring, experts warned that this could be one of the worst tick seasons in years. Their prediction has proved true making it incredibly important to prevent Lyme disease. Mother-daughter team, Gail and Laura Piazza, is raising awareness through a free education event on Lyme disease prevention and food-based healing at the South Fork Natural History Museum (SoFo) on Monday, August 7 at 5 p.m.
Gail, who partnered with her daughter to pen Recipes for Repair: A 10-week Program to Combat Chronic Inflammation and Identify Food Sensitivities, taught Dustin Hoffman how to separate eggs. She has been a food stylist for Emeril Lagasse’s cookware, developed recipes, and tested products for Farberware, All-Clad and William-Sonoma. You may recognize her from appearances on Food Network. The most memorable and inspiring work in her food career is the adventure she’s currently on with her daughter Laura.
“I lived with unexplained chronic symptoms for years until being properly diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2009,” Laura remembered. As she researched Lyme, she came across the book The Lyme Disease Solutionby Kenneth B. Singleton, MD, MPH, a former Lyme patient. She was impressed with his diet and the results patients were getting from it. But making the changes, and preparing the food overwhelmed her. “Luckily, I have a culinary artist in the family,” said Laura.
Gail immediately took interested and thought she could do something incredible with the recipes for her daughter. “I asked her to send me the list of foods,” said Gail. “The next day, she sent me back recipes for the first week of meals. It made it so simple, and it was delicious,” said Laura.
Laura experienced consistent stomach pains, indigestion, heartburn, and throat congestion, but they soon cleared up once her eating habits changed. “All I could think was, how many people could feel better from following Dr. Singleton’s diet? They just don’t have my Mom to make it easy and tasty,” stated Laura.
“One reader told us all her symptoms from Irritable Bowel Syndrome and a thyroid condition were completely eliminated. She felt strong, and more energetic than she was in her 20’s. And she also lost 30 pounds. That’s a success story,” Gail added.
At their free educational event, the mother-daughter duo will talk about foods to avoid or enjoy when suffering from chronic inflammation. They will discuss how nutritional changes can help minimize or eliminate some symptoms of inflammatory conditions, and how nutritional changes played a key role in Laura’s battle with Lyme Disease.
