Free climbing sessions for people with disabilities at Westway Sports and Fitness Centre

Westway Sports & Fitness is offering climbing sessions to anyone with a disability.

The centre, with its renowned climbing walls which are used by Olympic hopefuls , is launching a one-hour session for anyone who is blind, deaf or has mobility issues.

This is limited to two people per session, but slightly larger groups will be offered for those with autism and anyone with behavioural difficulties.

The centre, in Crowthorne Road, is operated by Everyone Active in partnership with Westway Trust .

Everyone Active general manager Ian Ling said: “We are delighted to be able to offer these sessions, as climbing has many proven fantastic physical health and helps improve mental wellbeing too.

“Regular climbing can improve stamina as well as muscle strength, while all the reaching and stretching improves flexibility, agility and develops problem solving skills. By offering these disability sessions for free, we hope to create greater access to the sport and show people how fun it can be.”

Stephen Wren, director of sport and leisure at Westway Trust – the charity which looks after land beneath the Westway flyover, said: “Climbing has been a part of life under the Westway for many years and it is great to see that we’re now able to offer free climbing for disabled people in the borough.

“Expanding the opportunity to be more active, more often, to as many people as possible locally was the driving reason we formed a partnership with Everyone Active and I’m delighted to see new sports and leisure activities that we would not have been able to make available.”
