The husband and wife were verbally abused by the group near to the McColl’s store, on Howlbeck Road
An elderly married couple were verbally abused about their disabilities by a gang of youths in Guisborough.
The couple were repeatedly taunted by the group who were standing near to the McColl’s store on Howlbeck Road on Friday afternoon.
Officers are asking any witnesses to the abuse, which happened at around 2pm, to come forward with information.
Posting on social media, East Cleveland Neighbourhood Policing Team said the behaviour would “not be tolerated”.
The post said: “We take these incidents very seriously and will be commencing an investigation and those responsible should expect a visit from the police.
“This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated.
“We encourage victims of hate crime to report any such incidents to us.”
A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “Police were contacted on Saturday by an elderly man who reported that the day before, at 2pm on Friday, February 1, he and his wife had been verbally abused regarding their disabilities by a group of young people who were near the McColl’s store on Howlbeck Road in Guisborough.”
The force added that inquiries are ongoing into the verbal abuse and that officers are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time and who may be able to help identify the young people to contact Cleveland Police via the 101 number.
