When you’ve got a disability, however, it can seem even more inaccessible.
The original purpose of yoga is to train the body and mind to be present and aware of themselves. To achieve wholeness. To promote a harmony between our mental and physical states.
And that holistic element is even more important when something traumatic happens to your body.
Which is how one amputee came to use her Instagram as a platform for challenging our preconceptions of what limb loss looks like and what it means for those who have gone through it.
28-year-old Kat Hawkins – AKA Amputee Kat – is a dancer and GB volleyball athlete who is more flexible that most of us can ever dream of being.
She lost both of her legs below the knee after contracting meningitis during her degree back in 2008.
Four years ago, she started practising yoga in her bedroom at home. And keen to spread the message of how much yoga can help holistically, she’s been blogging her moves and experiences to her 2,666 followers using the hashtag #amputeeyoga (which has hundreds of posts from around the world).
